Halcyon /halsēən/
Denoting a period of time
in the past
that was idyllically happy and peaceful

Halcyon the Shop opened its doors on September 9, 1999 in a small shop on Smith Street in Brooklyn, selling a wide variety of vinyl records from dance, jazz, funk, soul, rock, hip hop, techno, house and beyond. Functioning much like today’s concept store, the original Halcyon not only sold vinyl records, but also knick knacks, collectible items, and home furnishing and décor, where customers were able to buy anything with a price tag on it from the vinyl record they were listening to, to the plush couch they were sitting on.

Over the years, Halcyon evolved with the ups and downs of the music industry, hopscotching around Brooklyn locations and sometimes changing focus in genres and offerings. A common thread true to Halcyon’s ethos throughout the past two decades has been the shop’s dedication to creating and fostering a community around music, with Halcyon’s motto “united against silence” ringing true.
As we look back on the past 20 years, we are grateful to have served the Brooklyn community and beyond for so long. We have come to the decision that it is now time that we close our doors for the foreseeable future, but we do hope to re-open in the future when the time is right. Music is our culture’s heartbeat that carries us all through the good, the bad, the exceptional and the mundane. We encourage you all to keep Halcyon’s heartbeat going in your homes, your hearts and your lives, always. Thank you to you all who have been our family for the past 20 years, until we meet again.
